Abstract
This article presents a comparative reading of two recently published works from opposite sides of the Rio Grande: Miguel Ángel González Quiroga's Guerra y paz en la frontera, 1830–1880, published in Mexico, and Rebrotes de violencia racial. Reflexiones críticas sobre la historia de la frontera, edited by Sonia Hernández and John Morán González, and published in the United States. Through three interconnected analytical axes—state violence, historical memory, and border identity—this study argues the following thesis: while González Quiroga reconstructs violence as a structural phenomenon inherent to state formation and the colonization of the northern region, Hernández and Morán González approach it as an expression of institutional racism and historical silencing. Regarding memory, it is posited that both texts seek to deconstruct foundational myths—the 19th-century narrative of "pacification" in the former, and the "Texan civilization" in the latter—through narrative strategies that combine archival research, testimony, and cultural critique. Finally, concerning identity, it is maintained that both historiographical projects conceptualize the border not as a dividing line, but as a relational field of multiple belongings.
