Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between the irregular combatants called orientales and the tropical forest of the Yucatan Peninsula between the years of 1839 and 1843. The sources used to write this article are mostly war reports and interrogations of Mexican officers prosecuted for actions carried out during the campaign. Through the analysis of this relationship we will be able to see the way in which this period was important for a contingent of Yucatecan combatants to adapt to fighting among the vegetation of the tropical forest and learn to use the resources they could obtain from it to achieve their military goals. The tropical forest, present in both the east and west of the Peninsula, allowed the orientales to develop a type of combat dispersed among the vegetation, which distinguished them from a large part of the Yucatecan troops.
